In honor of “Earth Day” here are a few recent photos of the Tug Hill area.

The snow remains in the woods (and probably will for some time) but Spring has arrived.

Out with the Old…

Wild weather this past month. Seems like March in its extremes….The wind and rain a few days ago made a lot of the snow from earlier this month and November (and October!) disappear. But the weatherman says there’s a “wintery pattern” developing so fear not, there is plenty more coming. Out with the old snow, in with the new.

A thaw followed by cold always makes for a hard crust on the snow. I remember as a kid heading into the back 40 with skiis I’d gotten from the Salvation Army, starting on the hill of one end of our long meadow and going all the way to the other end without stopping. What a thrill that was, and no need for expensive lift tickets!

eight times is the charm

Finally, on the eighth try, the bill extending tax credits for solar, wind and other alternative energy has passed in the senate 93-2. This is the eighth time this has come up, once failing by just one vote (McCain who has the state with the biggest to lose on this did not vote). Too busy yelping drill, baby, drill instead of what will immediately help.

But at least its done and lets hope the president follows through on this rather than catering to big oil.

When I heard the politicians screaming the phrase “drill,baby, drill”, I thought: what is the matter with you people? They should be shouting : wind, baby, wind!!

And what is the matter with them that they have not passed the extension on the bill on tax credits for alternatives like solar and wind? Do you know that John McCain DID NOT EVEN SHOW UP to vote eight different times, and his own state with a large amount of businesses in alternative is affected more than any other . Obama did a little better, showing up three times to vote. We should as a nation be doing anything we can do foster less dependency on fossil fuels. As most things in life boil down to money, I would think at the very least they could approve tax credits for those with initiative to go forward with wind and solar and hydrogen and others. Make OIL the ”alternative”. If Germany can do 20 percent right now, what is the matter with us? NOTHING. Only the people that we elect who proclaim broad energy plans when they can’t even get an extension on an existing bill that helps get these sources of energy off the drawing board and into reality.

Happy Spring

On Sunday in Winona Forest we saw a huge woodpecker, his scarlet head bobbing as he held dominance in an old maple tree. My oldest son saw it first. Astounded at its size he called to his brother and I. It was a foot in length at least, it’s head looked inches across. Searching methodically for ladybugs coming out of hibernation, he ignored us completely as we ooed and awed over its size. I have never seen such a large woodpecker. The old maple seemed defenseless against the boring of its beak. I wouldn’t want him near my house! It was nice too see this sign of spring in motion.
